Challenge

Edwards Lifting Services, a highly experienced crane hire company in Lancashire, needed to achieve a 4m²+ outrigger pad set up for a contract lift. The mats needed to be man handle able, easy to install, as well as strong and stable. They also needed to fit into weight restrictions for transport reasons.

Solution

After deliberating between the 1.8m Multi Mats and the brand new 2m Multi Mat set up, it was decided that the 2m Multi Mats were a perfect fit for Edwards Lifting Services, not only did it achieve their need for a 4m² set up, but also as a modular system it is able to achieve a 2.8m² set up for smaller jobs.

Outcome

Edwards Lifting services collected their brand new Multi Mat set up in March 2021, the mats went straight onto site in their first job, which was a large contract lift, and received nothing but positive feedback from both the crane operators and the customers.

CHALLENGE

FM Gru, a highly regarded manufacturer of self-erecting, tower and luffing cranes based in Italy’s northern industrial heartland, is providing four cranes for the difficult construction work for the replacement of the Morandi Bridge in Genoa. The bridge collapsed in August 2018 and the construction for the replacement is a huge job. FM Gru required very specific bespoke crane pads that were relatively lightweight yet robust and durable, and large enough to support it’s 2670 TLX and 2675 TLX flat top cranes. The FM Gru team visited Outriggerpads at Vertikal Days, a show they were exhibiting at earlier on in the year, where they agreed to provide them with the bespoke pads they needed to complete the construction work.

SOLUTION

The Outriggerpads team manufactured and delivered 16 pads measuring 2,400mm x 2,400mm x 100mm in a very short period of time. Each pad weighs 560kg and are manufactured from high-performance UHMW polyethylene. Polyethylene spreader plates hold their shape under extreme pressure and can adapt to the contours of the terrain, they are also lighter weight than equivalent pads made of metal or wood. Managing director for FM Gru, Giacomo Fuochi expressed his appreciation for the quality of the crane pads as well as the quick turn around and customer service from Outriggerpads.

OUTCOME

The reconstruction work for the bridge is currently taking place in Genoa, and Italian Government expect it to be finished in April 2020. FM Gru are using the 16 bespoke pads to support their 2670 TLX and 2675 TLX flat top cranes. Outriggerpads Business Development Manager said “It is a great feeling to know that our pads will play a small role in the construction of a new iconic bridge for Genoa”.

Challenge

Based in Flint in North Wales, with depots in Manchester, Durham and Scunthorpe, Bryn Thomas Cranes Ltd supplies mobile cranes and mobile tower cranes of up to 500t lift capacity to a range of blue chip clients. After years of using wooden crane mats with its mobile cranes, the company wanted a more durable solution.

Solution

Outriggerpads supplied Bryn Thomas Cranes with its Multi Mat System solution. This modular system provides flexibility to use in various configurations. Manufactured from high-quality UHMW polyethylene, it is lightweight, easy to assemble and highly durable. The 1500 x 500 x 50mm Multi Mats weigh just 35kg each, and can be configured for cranes ranging from 75 to 110 tonnes.

UHMW polyethylene is resistant to water, oil and chemicals – and unlike wooden or some metal spreader plates – there’s no risk of corrosion or splintering. The material also cleverly adapts to the contours of uneven terrain – but will spring back to its original shape after use.

Outcome

The Multi Mats removed the need for Bryn Thomas to regularly order replacement wooden crane mats. They were also a more affordable solution for the company than aluminium mats.

Challenge

Founded by Neil Berry in 2000, Berry Cranes has rapidly grown and now has a hire fleet of 10 modern mobile cranes – both truck-mounted and all-terrain – ranging up to 100t lifting capacity. The family-run company, based in Towcester, Northamptonshire, wanted new crane mats that were easy to lift and handle, and that were both lighter and more durable than the steel mats it had used.

Solution

Outriggerpads supplied Berry Cranes with its 1.5m x 1.5m crane mats, which include integrated steel bar handles manufactured from high density polyethylene (HDPE), they are durable and the material is resistant to water, oil and chemicals – unlike metal or wooden spreader plates – there’s no risk of corrosion or splintering.

Outcome

The unique design of the spreader plates incorporates four metal bars to facilitate lifting hooks. Weighing 225kg each, they are considerably lighter than the equivalent sized steel pads, but have a greater load bearing capability.
