New Crane Mats Provide Added Flexibility for Cape plc

New mobile crane spreader plates are proving to be a flexible friend to an industrial support services specialist.

Cape plc has invested in two types of crane mat from Outriggerpads. They spread the load pressure of a crane’s stabilisers or outriggers, helping to prevent a stabiliser from puncturing the ground, which can cause serious instability.

The 1.5m square pads incorporate four metal bars to facilitate lifting hooks. Weighing 214kg each, they are considerably lighter than the equivalent sized steel pads, but have a greater load bearing capability of up to 200 tonnes.

Cape also invested in an interlocking Multi Mat system from Outriggerpads. The modular Multi Mat System provides a flexible solution for cranes. Operators are able to stack the mats in various configurations, depending on available space and load capacity requirements.

The interlocking system ensures that there are no gaps between the mats, improving set up speed while keeping the system sufficiently light weight to be set up by hand. With six configurations offering load capacities of 75 to 160 tonnes, the system is designed to support a wide range of mobile cranes.

Cape is using both sets of spreader plates for maintenance work at Syngenta’s award-winning Huddersfield Manufacturing Centre. Syngenta manufactures several of its important crop protection products at the facility, for export worldwide. Herbicides such as Gramoxone®, Fusilade® and Reglone® are all manufactured on site, as well as the insecticides Karate® and Force®.

Tony Brennan, Structural Steel and Mechanical Superintendent for Cape plc, said: “Having two different types of spreader plate helps to optimise our productivity while maintaining the highest possible safety standards.

“The 1.5m crane mats are very quick and easy to lift and position with a fork lift truck. However there are some areas where there is not enough room for a fork lift to manoeuvre. This is when we benefit from the flexibility of the interlocking Multi Mats, as they are easy to carry and position by hand, and we can set them up in different configurations.”

Both the crane mats and the Multi-Mat system are made from high-density polyethylene (HDPE). Outriggerpads was the first company in the UK to offer 1.5m x 1.5m HDPE crane mats. This material is resistant to water, oil and chemicals – and unlike metal or wooden spreader plates, there’s no risk of corrosion or splintering.

Outriggerpads Showcases New Jack Pads at CCM 2018

Outriggerpads will officially launch its new stabiliser and jack pad for motorhomes at the Caravan, Camping & Motorhome Show 2018.

The Eco Lift motorhome and caravan stabiliser jack pad is specifically designed for use on grass or soft ground. They sit under the jack legs, helping to spread the ground pressure and improve stability.

Charles Grizzle, Business Development Manager for Outriggerpads, said: “With our temperamental British weather, ground conditions can very rapidly change. Our Eco Lift pads can take the strain, providing an extra level of confidence that your caravan, RV or motorhome will remain stable.”

The large surface area of the Eco Lift jack pad helps to diffuse the ground pressure of the jack legs, in order to prevent subsidence. Each pad is made from high density polyethylene (HDPE), meaning it is extremely lightweight and doesn’t take up much room. Fitted with a rope handle, they are easy to carry and position. HDPE pads hold their shape under extreme vertical pressure and can adapt to the contours of the terrain. They are also water and corrosion-resistant.

New Motorhome and Caravan Jack Stabiliser Pads

The standard black pad measures 300mm x 300mm x 25mm, and features a recess to house the stabiliser foot. It weighs just 1.9kg and has a 4-tonne load capacity. Options include a thicker 30mm pad for heavier loads, or upgrading the colour to high-visibility yellow, which helps to alert pedestrians to any potential trip hazard and makes the pads easier to locate.

New Ground Protection Mat from Outriggerpads

Outriggerpads is launching a new heavy duty ground protection mat aimed at the plant hire, events and construction industries.

Ground mats protect concrete, turf and paved areas from the damage caused by mobile cranes, access platforms, construction equipment and other heavy vehicles. They also help prevent machines from losing traction or getting bogged down. Applications include construction, landscaping, utilities, estates management and outdoor events.

Business Development Co-ordinator for Outriggerpads, said: “We developed the ground mat in response to demand from our customer base, as a complementary product to our spreader plates.

“We’ve worked hard to deliver a product that is extremely durable, has great load bearing capabilities and provides a superior grip. It is also lightweight, portable, and easy to link together, making it ideal for creating temporary roads or even a parking area.”

Manufactured from high density polyethylene (HDPE), they are highly durable as they are resistant to water, oil and chemicals; and there is no chance of corrosion or splintering. A standard steel connector easily joins the mats together to form a temporary roadway, while a four-way link bar is also available for creating a large surface area such as for parking.

Outriggerpads offers two sizes of ground mat. The 1.8m x 0.9m product is designed to accommodate most access platforms, mini-excavators and similar-sized plant equipment. Featuring integrated handles and weighing just 24kg, it is light enough for one person to safely lift and position.

The heavy-duty 2.88m x 1.44m pad is suitable for big booms and scissors, as well as cranes and excavators. . It can withstand extreme vertical pressures, with load-bearing capabilities of 12 to 65 tonnes, depending on terrain. This pad weighs 65kg and, features six handles, making it easy for two people to carry it and put it in place.

The mats have a non-slip 8mm extruded finish on both sides, meaning they grip the ground as well as providing a superior grip for machine tyres or tracks.

Outriggerpads Expands Team

Bernadette Rock has joined the Outriggerpads team as Field Sales Executive, working to develop new business and support existing accounts. One of her first tasks was meeting with clients and potential customers at Vertikal Days, the UK’s largest trade show dedicated to cranes and access platforms.

“Vertikal Days was a great opportunity for me as a new starter with the company,” she said. “We took orders on the stand and are following up a large number of enquiries. It was also the best possible start in terms of meeting as many customers and potential customers as possible.”

Bernadette previously worked in industrial recruitment, in a B2B role. At Outriggerpads, she will report to Charles Grizzle, Business Development Manager. She is based out of headquarters in Telford, Shropshire, but will cover the whole of the UK and support international customers.

Charles said: “The expansion of the team reflects the growth of both our international customer base and our product range.

“Bernadette’s experience in industrial recruitment has given her a good working knowledge of our sector. More importantly, she is extremely proactive, focused and customer-oriented. She is already making a positive impact and is a great addition to our team.”
